Prayers

We need prayers that this latest issue is a minor setback for Ed.  The doctor, in rehab, did a test called a sedimentation rate test and his was very high.  It can mean many things, but one is a sign of infection even though his white cells are good and he hasn’t had a temperature or any outward signs of infection at the incision.  The surgeon wants to see him on Thursday, in Hartford, and…

Another Good Day

Watched him do his PT this morning and I could see how much better he is doing.  They do feel he’s not ready to come home until he is stronger.  The meeting we had with staff was to discuss the plan for him and if we had any questions. The issue the ultrasound found is a cyst behind his knee called a Baker’s cyst.  Ed says that’s been there for years and so far hasn’t…

Progressing

It was a better day and he’s been able to move that leg around a bit more.  The problem is his upper body strength that makes it difficult to get up off the bed, or out of the chair.  They are working on getting him stronger.  The incision looks good, but he does have staples even though they said they would use glue.  As long as it stays closed, that’s all we care about. He…

A New Day

It was quite a frustrating day for all of us. There just isn’t enough help no matter where you go. Ed called and said the nurse wanted to talk to me and she said it wasn’t an emergency, but they didn’t have any dilantin to give him and could I bring one pill in. What… that’s an emergency to us! Thank goodness it’s only five minutes away, so I grabbed the entire bottle of dilantin…

In Rehab

What a difference a day makes.  Yesterday we thought he may never get out of the hospital and, this morning, he called that they were sending him to rehab.  He was much more alert, blood counts and kidney functions were better and the only thing was his leg is still swollen. He went by ambulance to The Pines Nursing/Rehab facility which is about 5 minutes from the apartment. The place is very nice and the…

Still in the Hospital

He had a rough morning because they didn’t want him out of bed at all.  He couldn’t go to the bathroom, get washed or have PT.  His leg was swollen and they didn’t want him moving around until they did an ultrasound.  They were checking to make sure there were no blood clots causing the swelling. The surgery was on the same leg he previously had clots in, so they were being careful.  Thankfully the…

Going to Rehab

From all Ed has been going through, his body is weak and he’s not able to lift himself or do little things.  He’s walking ok, but has no strength in much else, so they feel he needs time in a rehab center.  Have no word on when he’ll go, but it is the best for him even though he doesn’t think so. Since Monday I’ve valet parked with no problems – today, a tree limb…

Day #3

It was a little bit of a scary day.  He was getting another two units of blood since the first two didn't seem to raise the red cells high enough.  He was sleeping on and off, hallucinating and mumbling.  He also looked a little swollen and he told me he had double vision and I asked if he let them know.  His answer was no because he didn't think it was anything.  I said they…

Not Home Yet

Even though Ed is doing well as far as the surgery, he needed two units of blood today.  He has always been anemic, so this wasn't upsetting, or a surprise.  After some of his chemo treatments he needed transfusions and he tolerated those well. They're watching him closely and continue to get him up and walking around. He's able to handle all of that quite well, except for trying to get into the 'car' they…

Doing Great!

The surgery went well and they had him up and walking down the hall an hour after he was in his room.  He said his pain level was a 12, even though the highest on his chart was a 10.  After a few 'magic' pills he was down to a 9.  It will take time, but the worst is over and he'll do just fine, like he always does. Talked to him tonight and they…
