Going to Rehab

Waiting to hear from the nursing home on a time for him to be admitted. He had a male PT yesterday and he recommended going for rehab and Ed agreed. We both know if he can’t get in and out of a chair or sofa, he’s not getting better at home.

Day #1

It was not a good day, Ed continues to struggle getting up from the chair or even from the bed. The PT and a nurse were here and agreed he has no upper body strength and should be going to rehab. Even the PT person had a hard time getting him from the chair. They did call the surgeon to see if he would approve him going to rehab, but he said no. So, all…

Home

Ed is home and having a tough time navigating the chair.  Getting down is ok, but getting up is a challenge, even with Tim helping him.  We decided to see how he would do getting in the bed, and it was much easier.  PT is coming on Saturday. so she'll help him with the chair.  It will all take time and he has to remember the last surgery he was in the hospital 5 days…

Not Home

After a rough night, he looked pretty good when I saw him. He was alert, talking, watching TV and ate lunch. When PT came, they told him he couldn't go home if he wasn't able to lift himself from the chair – which he couldn't do yesterday without help. He tried four times, today, and struggled each time, so they will need to work with him on getting those arms stronger. It's not his legs,…

Ed’s New Knee

After surgery, Ed was alert and in recovery for a few hours before going to his room. He looked so much better than after the last knee surgery. They gave him a spinal this time and it seemed to make a big difference. Dr. Murray said everything went smoothy, without any issues. He wore compression boots this time, instead of the leg compression ones. Every time the boot compressed, he said it really hurt the…

Ready for a Marathon

The staples came out on Wednesday and he’s doing really well.  Walking with pain, but certainly not the pain he once had.  The surgeon said he’s doing great and not to be concerned with the swelling which will occur, off and on, for a few months. He’s already talking about having the right knee done, but that won’t be until the winter months are over.  The visiting PT and nurse will end today and he’ll…

A Walk Outside

Had another good day with PT and she really pushes him.  She grabbed his leg and lifted it in the air and I thought it was going to fly off.  He never flinched and she looked at my shocked face and said ‘oh, he’s ok.’  I told her I knew he was, but if I ever did that, he would have called 911 for domestic violence! After PT he rested for a while and then…

Nurse & PT

The nurse and physical therapist were not only surprised with all he went through, but how good he is doing now.  He’ll get 4 more days of at home PT and then will go to a facility for additional care.  There is one right around the corner, so we won’t have far to go. He had a good night and actually got up by himself to use the bathroom.  The PT said he is so…

There’s No Place Like Home

It's so good to have him home and it was remarkable to watch him walk down the hall, by himself, to say goodbye to his first roommate.  Then he walked to the car and was able to get himself in without any help.  Tim was waiting for us at the apartment in case he had a hard time getting out of the car, but he didn't.  He certainly has come a long way and is…

On His Way Home

Tomorrow, Tuesday, Ed should be on his way home.  So much confusion, even with a discharge, but soon it will be over. After PT the surgeons assistant, we saw last week, called to see how he was doing and was surprised he was still there. Apparently she then called the supervisor in PT and within 15 minutes they were talking about him going home.  I left to get things ready at home and he called…
