Quiet Day

Nothing exciting to write about today, and that’s the way we like it.  Ed has been enjoying a day of football and is content to stay until they release him.  He’s made so much progress in the last few days and he should be home this week. The incision looks good and even the swelling is going down.  Everything takes time and now he will have to listen to Nurse Ratchet when he gets home.

New Room and Another New Room

Yesterday, Friday, he was moved to another room at the opposite end of the hall.  Before we were even in the room, they were getting his new roommate moved in.  Oh my, he was not a happy camper and let them know it.  He was mumbling and swearing while surrounded by 4 nurses and 1 supervisor.  They were trying to calm him but he kept on rambling….. a few words I caught were "not letting…

On the Move

Ed was told this morning he would be moving to another room.  We thought his roommate may have told them about the snoring and noise, but they said no.  They were trying to get all the patients, needing the same kind of care, in an area closer to the nurse's station. Today I asked him how many times they did the leg elevation and ice treatment, and he said none at all. Went home with…

Good News

After an exciting thrill ride to Hartford for Ed’s appointmen to see the surgeon, we were relieved to hear his assistant tell us the swelling is normal.  She said with the other health issues Ed has, it’s not unusual to see his leg swollen like that.  There was no sign of an infection and the high sedimentation rate, again, was something normal for an invasive surgery on someone like Ed.  Such comforting words to hear…

Prayers

We need prayers that this latest issue is a minor setback for Ed.  The doctor, in rehab, did a test called a sedimentation rate test and his was very high.  It can mean many things, but one is a sign of infection even though his white cells are good and he hasn’t had a temperature or any outward signs of infection at the incision.  The surgeon wants to see him on Thursday, in Hartford, and…

Another Good Day

Watched him do his PT this morning and I could see how much better he is doing.  They do feel he’s not ready to come home until he is stronger.  The meeting we had with staff was to discuss the plan for him and if we had any questions. The issue the ultrasound found is a cyst behind his knee called a Baker’s cyst.  Ed says that’s been there for years and so far hasn’t…

Progressing

It was a better day and he’s been able to move that leg around a bit more.  The problem is his upper body strength that makes it difficult to get up off the bed, or out of the chair.  They are working on getting him stronger.  The incision looks good, but he does have staples even though they said they would use glue.  As long as it stays closed, that’s all we care about. He…

A New Day

It was quite a frustrating day for all of us. There just isn’t enough help no matter where you go. Ed called and said the nurse wanted to talk to me and she said it wasn’t an emergency, but they didn’t have any dilantin to give him and could I bring one pill in. What… that’s an emergency to us! Thank goodness it’s only five minutes away, so I grabbed the entire bottle of dilantin…

In Rehab

What a difference a day makes.  Yesterday we thought he may never get out of the hospital and, this morning, he called that they were sending him to rehab.  He was much more alert, blood counts and kidney functions were better and the only thing was his leg is still swollen. He went by ambulance to The Pines Nursing/Rehab facility which is about 5 minutes from the apartment. The place is very nice and the…

Still in the Hospital

He had a rough morning because they didn’t want him out of bed at all.  He couldn’t go to the bathroom, get washed or have PT.  His leg was swollen and they didn’t want him moving around until they did an ultrasound.  They were checking to make sure there were no blood clots causing the swelling. The surgery was on the same leg he previously had clots in, so they were being careful.  Thankfully the…
