It definitely is getting more difficult to see the way Ed is not responding like he was before. Today, he didn’t want to do much of anything, even talk or eat. His favorite thing to do is chew on ice chips. He did become a little more alert when he got a FaceTime call from his sisters. It was nice to see his eyes open and him responding to them. He really enjoyed seeing Joan,…
I missed posting yesterday since there was so much going on. When I went to his room, the bed was gone and the nurse told me they moved him. She wasn’t sure what the reason was, because she wasn’t there. When I asked what floor, she told me H which is ICU. My heart skipped a beat and even though I couldn’t get there fast enough, I was afraid to walk in his room. He…
Ed was having pain last night and a hard time sleeping, so they gave him two Percocets, which I think was one too many. He was hallucinating, yelling and still had pain. We played cards and he was doing ok except for the continual pain in his shoulder, back, leg and hip. The doctor felt he was dehydrated, causing muscle cramps, and put him on IV fluids. That seemed to help until his stomach started…
Today was pretty much the same as yesterday with him being alert and then sleeping. When I was there in the morning, he was doing ok and we even played cards. Later he wanted to wash up and when they got him back in bed he drifted in and out of sleep for about an hour. I couldn’t even get him awake to play cards, but when the phone rang and announced it was Dan,…
It was hard to tell what was going on today. He was back and forth between being alert and then falling asleep instantly. Blood is still good and so is coumadin level, but concern now is getting him stronger. He’s been in bed for a week and had no food or fluids for days, so they need to get him moving around. Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy saw him and are leaning towards him going…
The ultrasound and x-rays came back negative, so the pain was probably due to him not moving while on his back with both arms hooked up to IV’s. They wanted to make sure there were no blood clots since he was in a lot of pain. Thankfully, that was not the issue. His blood count was at 8.3 and is holding… as we hold our breath, too. They’ll start him on coumadin and take him…
Talked to him this morning and he had a bad night. Not from anything that’s been going on, but he was in pain with his shoulder. He’s had problems with it before and was told it’s his rotator cuff, but he just lived with it. Probably from being in bed for so long, it decided to freeze on him and he said it was excruciatingly painful. They gave him pain meds that helped and he…
So far, no more bleeding but they did want to give him one more unit of blood. His count was still low, so trying to boast it up with another pint. They finally gave him a tray of real food and he ate every bit of it. Once his blood count is stable and they get the coumadin levels stable, he will be able to come home. Talked to a doctor this morning and she…
It was another long day. but this time we have answers. He needed another two units of blood and after the first unit, they took him for another colonoscopy. This time they were able to find the two areas that were bleeding and cauterized them. The lesions are called Dieulafoy’s lesion and the nurse said she never heard of that before….. no surprise! He’s feeling better and hoping to get some food soon, so I…
Long day with very few answers. They couldn’t get a good read with the colonoscopy because of the blood, but they did a CT scan to rule out any active bleeding. There was no active bleeding so they didn’t feel they needed to go back in. I know Dr. Zweig will continue to investigate until he finds out what is going on. Just when we think Ed has had everything listed in the medical journal,…
