Broken Heart

Ed was always so strong and came back to us from many surgeries, illnesses and even cancer, but this was too much for him.  My heart is broken and as I sit here, I can’t believe I won’t ever be hugging him again.

On Monday, I knew he was getting ready to leave us and said, many times, he was tired and done fighting. Some of you may not have known that he was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia two months ago. It was painful to watch him gradually lose physical abilities, while his memory remained strong. He was well aware of what that diagnosis meant so, if there is a blessing in him passing now, it’s that he won’t suffer through the devastating effects of this cruel dementia.

Tuesday, he continued to say he was done fighting and asked God to let him go so he could be with his child. He said to me “goodbye my love” and to Tim, “goodbye Timmy”. There is no doubt in my mind that Wendi was at Heaven’s door with her arms reaching out and saying…… Daddy! He also has his big brother Bob there and his Mom and Dad. He had a special connection to Kim’s Dad, Mike, so we know they are once again together and talking sports.

Tim and Kim were with me every step of the way and I couldn’t have gone through this without them and I know they will always be there. I’m grateful to have been with My Eddie when he started his journey to Heaven. We have been married 55 years but together much longer than that. I don’t know how to face a day without taking care of him. We are all heartbroken to think we won’t have him here with us, but he is safe and no more suffering. My love goes out to his family and my family who are not able to be here, but were all here when it mattered.

The staff at the hospital couldn’t have been more caring and seeing how many came to the room to say goodbye, with tears in their eyes, was a comfort to us. He touched hearts in that short time being there. The Hospice Staff were beyond helpful in getting him a private room and anything and everything he needed, or wanted. Kim is a volunteer at the hospital for Hospice and helped us to understand all that was going on.

They kept him comfortable the entire night before he passed, and brought in a glowing candle and covered him with a prayer shawl.

There has been such an outpouring of love from everyone and we can’t express how grateful we are, and how it helped us through each day.

He will be cremated on Friday and we will get his ashes on Monday. We are bringing him home for Christmas and then his ashes will be in the same crypt as Wendi.

Farewell, our Eddie, and until we meet again…. we love you!
