It’s Linda – updating the journal now. Thanks to Tim for keeping this going, and letting everyone know how Ed was doing every step of the way. It was a great help to me. Ed enjoyed his day yesterday with his new nurse, Kimberly (aka – daughter-in-law). She did a great job and kept him laughing – not too much though. Ed’s doing well today, for lunch he had Chicken salad sandwich, a carrot, chicken noodle soup and finished everything. He also had a small diet Coke so now he’s burping up a storm. He’s received about 10 email greetings and enjoyed reading them all. They took another x-ray today and said that it shows an improvement over yesterday… no word yet on when the chest tube will come out. He hasn’t walked around today because…
Linda called the hospital early this morning and talked with Ed and he said he had a good nights sleep. He’s still in a lot of pain, but they are keeping him comfortable as best they can – they know he doesn’t complain… so when he does, they help him. The doctor was in and said his lung was collapsed – that was the difficulty in breathing, and the pain. Maybe with all of that…
As you could imagine, it wasn’t a good day for Ed with that chest tube inside him. Since they put the tube in him this morning, he’s been fighting pain in his upper chest and back. Apparently, the chest tube was inserted in such a way that it was pressing up against some nerves causing more discomfort throughout the day. They had to put a chest tube in Ed this morning. They spotted air around his lungs when they did a cat scan Friday, another x-ray this morning still showed air and that’s why he was feeling uncomfortable the past couple of days. Ed was looking good today, still has some rough periods trying to cough up some of the nasties in his lungs. He’s been walking around the hallways every few hours and actually made it all the way to the waiting room where we’ve been sitting… All his tubes have been taken out along with the catheter so he’s been up and down going to the bathroom. Brought him a CD player and an Audio book…
Ed is settled in his new room… he is in room 8910 for anyone interested in playing their State lottery. Today was a very good day and he continues to show great improvement. Just got a call from Linda… she said the breathing tube was taken out! His first words were, “I still can’t speak French”. I’ll let him explain that one to everyone later. They have Ed using a pillow over his chest and he has to cough to get the fluids out of his lungs. That has to be pretty painful but he’s been through this before 35 years ago so he knows what to expect…
Well, it was a long day… we arrived at the hospital around 6:00am and was able to talk with Ed before they took him away around 6:45. Then the waiting game started. We were told to go to the Cardiac ICU waiting room for any updates. Linda checked after a couple of hours and was told that they started around 7:30 which was 1/2 hour earlier than planned.
